MISSION 002

WHO: Everyone!
WHEN: May 3rd-28th
WHERE: Within the Labyrinth
WHAT: The second Mission
NOTES\WARNINGS: Potential death, violence, injury. Please add additional warnings as needed within threads.

⏵ into the labyrinth ⏴

Aurora's announced time for the mission was correct: four days after, as she had promised, the door to the Labyrinth opens, connected to Etraya's atmospheric bubble by its entrance point. Characters are directed to come to the entrance on May 3rd, and warned that they may want to bring medical supplies, weaponry, and any important artifacts along with them. She warns that large vehicles will not fit within the limited space available, and smaller ones may be difficult to remove, thus advises those to stay behind. Aurora also offers to watch over any companion animals and keep them safe while competitors complete the Labyrinth.

They are given a short amount of time outside of the entrance to speak with one another, to plan and organize themselves, before they are ushered into it in groups of two to four. Once passed the entrance, they'll find that they are unable to turn around and exit out of it: a barrier keeps them from going back into the city proper, and as soon as they are far enough forward, the walls around them shift, closing them in, moving in complex patterns meant to separate them and bring them together.

Characters with extraordinary abilities may find some of them inaccessible: super strength may be downgraded to closer to ordinary strength, magic may prove to be less predictable than it should be, and regardless of how strong, fast, or clever characters are: passing over the Labyrinth walls or destroying them proves to be impossible. While one may be able to run through the pathways at superhuman speeds, the pathways compensate for it by running them in circles, refusing to allow them to make any progress on their own.

⏵ pathways collide ⏴

Junctures of the Labyrinth often present competitors with choices, some that may have consequences: a left turn down a darker path may prove to be harmless, whereas the well-lit path may be full of traps intent on slowing them down: a trip wire that activates a swinging massive axe, or arrows that shoot straight out of the wall as soon as one gets close enough.

Other junctures may present characters with choices that have consequences: they can choose the shortest pathway, but at great personal risk to themselves or their partner (ie, you can go this way, but your arm isn’t going with you) or they can choose the lengthy pathway full of traps and trials they’ll have to surpass to get to the end.

⏵ balancing act ⏴

The pathway opens up into a massive space, but it's not one with an easy path out: instead, competitors will find an obstacle course that will not let them continue forward until they complete it. Many of the tasks involve things that one cannot do on their own: they must walk across multiple wooden boards balanced precariously on a tall beam, but to ensure it's balanced, there must be one person on both sides of the boards and make sure that they're walking on the board in just the right space to ensure their weight doesn't cause it to sink too far on the opposite side. If a smaller child is on one end, they may want to stand significantly further away from the beam than the larger person on the other half.

⏵ help! i'm bleeding! ⏴

A large garden area spawns off of a pathway. The peaceful chirping of birds can be heard among blooming cherry blossom trees, and it all seems utterly peaceful and calm. An area one might wish to take a breather in, enjoy the sunshine reflecting from above, and get a good nap in. Or would, except a companion bot whose abdomen is covered in ketchup appears to be struggling across the ground, crying out for help. They state they are bleeding profusely and require immediate medical attention, otherwise, they will die.

The companion bot also carries a bag of medical supplies and MREs, which player characters are welcome to utilize. The pathway out of this open space will not open until after the companion bot no longer states they are dying. Whether it's because they're "dead", or because those who came across them offered "medical attention" and patched them up until they've stated they're good and no longer need assistance - well, both will technically suffice.

⏵ choice is an illusion ⏴

After walking down an additional pathway, characters will find themselves trapped within a glass box. In front of them is a pedestal with two buttons: one red, and one green, as well as a tablet above it displaying the image of another group of characters. The tablet states hindering them will help you. You may either choose to make the second group's time through the maze more difficult, or hinder your progress by pressing the green button and helping the other group forward.

Characters are given two minutes to decide which path to take; the timer, on the tablet, counts down regardless of any attempt to break or hack it.

Pressing the green button will drop several squishmallows into the glass box. Inside one of them is a key that unlocks the roof of the glass box. Pressing the red button, while it promises to hinder the other group, actually. . . causes a toxic yellow gas to flood the glass box. The gas will burn the lungs of those who breathe it in, but it also begins slowly melting the glass box. This gas will make breathing difficult for the next 24 hours, but will not kill those who inhale it. Healing factors will not offset the gas.

⏵ who deserves the knife? ⏴

A group of two characters will walk through one corridor and find themselves strapped to two chairs, the backs of which are leaning against each other. In front of the both of them are drills, slowly approaching their chests. They cannot go sideways but can push forward and backward. They can push backward and get themselves further away from the threat of injury - forcing the person behind them to suffer but allowing themselves to escape - or they can push into the drill and free the person they're with. Alternatively, they can choose not to push either way, potentially sacrificing them both.

Three options, but they are left with minimal time to decide as the drill continues to press closer. If they choose to go out together, they'll find that as the drills press against their chest - they simply stop. Minimal blood will be spilled, and they will have all the time they need to figure out how to squirm out of their bindings.

⏵ the Siren waits for thee ⏴

A seemingly harmless pathway turns into much more trouble than it's worth. A few steps through a corridor, and suddenly competitors will find the floor falling out from under them, revealing a body of water and - no solid ground on either side of it. There are the walls, but they lack any good climbing holds. Within the water are numerous Sirens - beautiful androgynous creatures that sing soft songs meant to entice others into following them deep into the water. While they may look beautiful, their mouths are full of razor-sharp teeth, and their intentions certainly aren't innocent. However, the Sirens can only touch competitors once they have initiated touch first. They will do their best to encourage this: holding out their hands, crying out for help, pretending to drown, or trying to coax them into coming in close enough for a kiss. As long as they remain on the path, they're harmless. But the moment they reach out for the Sirens... getting away from them will not be easy. Their tails are powerful, built for moving swiftly throughout the water and dragging others along with them. They bite hard and will dig their teeth deep into flesh to discourage struggling.

If one gets captured by them? They're lunch. Or worse yet: if they get bitten but manage to escape, they may find themselves becoming a bit.. scaley around the neck, eyes shifting color to a too-soft green, and an almost impossible-to-resist urge to take a bite out of their friends.

This effect will continue until May 28th regardless of when the character reaches the end of the Labyrinth. After May 28th, they will find that their scales slowly begin to shed, their eyes begin to turn back to their normal shade, and any other new features slowly turn back to how they were before they were infected.

⏵ don't forget your ball of twine ⏴

The Labyrinth is large, and there are many challenges around each corner. There may be space for breaks in between monsters, challenges, riddles, places to sit and recuperate between battles and mind games. It's not all chaos and challenges meant to test one's strength of will.

⏵ NOTES ⏴

May's mission is completing a massive Labyrinth. All characters must enter the Labyrinth; whether or not they participate once they're inside is up to them, but no one will be permitted to stay behind in the city.

The duo who completes the Labyrinth first will be allowed to assist in choosing the next mission. Sign-ups for this are here. We will contact the chosen characters on May 13th.

This mission will cover the time between May 3rd and May 28th. After May 28th, any characters who have not yet exited the Labyrinth will be gathered by the companion bots and brought back into the city. The companion bots will be aiming for nonviolent intervention. If more is needed, please let us know here.

The first to exit will be returning to the city on May 15th.

There will be powercapping during this mission, but the extent of which is fully up to players. We want the Labyrinth to be challenging but don't want to hinder gameplay too much. If you have any questions relating to this or want assistance coming up with ways to powercap your character, please feel free to ask us here. We will be largely leaving this up to player discretion.

Food is scarce within the Labyrinth, but not impossible to find. There are chests (or maybe they're mimics?) strewn throughout with various useful items. One might have a sword, another might have a fresh chicken nugget Happy Meal from McDonalds. Or an entire birthday cake, candles included.

Large vehicles will not fit in the Labyrinth and must be left behind in the city.

Numerous challenges are throughout the Labyrinth. You are welcome to make your own, but we will also provide several you may utilize! Please feel free to throw down wildcards, or your own challenges into your prompts! The limitation is that characters must remain themselves throughout the challenges. There are no mirror replicas, nothing within the Labyrinth will affect their personalities or core values. It’s meant to challenge, not change them.

Deaths that occur within the Labyrinth will last 24 hours. Please report these on our Death Tracker.

All new locations will appear after player characters have returned to the city. Feel free to note the differences from the May 3rd map, versus what characters will be returning to on May 15th.

( clarke cannot fault anyone for taking a brief reprieve in this maze, especially as the sun begins to set on their first or second day stuck navigating the frustratingly spiraling pathways throughout the maze. it's been a lot, the variety of physical and emotional challenges enough to burn anyone out. clarke just personally doesn't think there's time to rest, and will likely push herself to the point of complete collapse before she takes so much as a catnap out here. if i sleep, i'm dead but also i'll sleep when i'm dead.

so she's still up and about, traipsing the pathway and straining her eyes to see in the failing light. she's running through the mental checklist of items she'd brought along in the overflowing go-bag strapped to her back and cutting into her shoulders, and has decided she probably has enough to make a torch when — what was that?

the deep, grumble of something big and furred; something that very likely had teeth and claws. something that's completely comfortable in the impending darkness, but incredibly discontent (or maybe hungry) that it's currently sharing space with a person. or, people apparently, because the next thing clarke hears is the startled voice of a young girl emanating from a little alcove just a few feet in front of her. clarke unglues her feet from where they'd temporarily rooted to the spot due to the immediate adrenaline dump and peers around the edge of the rocky doorway.

she sees the color of asuka's hair and immediately thinks of rita. but the spark of optimism dies out as quickly as it'd flared to life. oh, it's that one girl who'd yelled at her for scaring off a stray cat. that hadn't been great in terms of first impressions, but hardly mattered when there's the very real possibility of something genuinely dangerous out there this time. )

Shh. You're not crazy, ( she implores, voice low and a little rushed. they need to be quiet, and they need to move. )

But you should get up, you should get out of there. You don't want to be stuck in an enclosed space with nowhere to run if —

( clarke cuts herself off, not so much bothered by the prospect she's about to be called wildly paranoid again. but because that paranoia is in full force; all the baby hairs on the back of her neck standing up, suddenly and absolutely convinced something dark and lurking nearby had heard asuka and seen her. )

[ Asuka almost jumps out of her skin when Clarke pokes her head around the corner of the doorway, stifling a shriek with both of her hands as she stares up at her with wide eyes. It takes her a moment to register who it is and then her expression crumples into something sour. ]

Oh, it's you-

[ She starts to say but - well. Clarke seems to be making sense this time around. Asuka fidgets and starts to clamber to her feet, despite her reluctance to listen to someone she was yelling at a week or three ago, her heavy back hiked a bit higher on her back. ]

...what do you think it is? [ She'll argue later. Like Clarke, she has the feeling that something isn't right, and she edges toward the doorway to join her. ]

( clarke has already long accepted that in the belly of the maze, with so many of them running about and the walls seemingly inclined to separate them from anyone they'd actually want to stick near or work as a team with, no one gets any say about who is going to crop up in dire situations. and that's fine, that's largely the same way life seems to work. for a solid few seconds it seems like the other girl is going to pitch a bitter fit about it, but she quiets herself and for that clarke can be grateful.

what do you think it is? )

I don't know. ( but there's that profoundly unsettling growl ripping through the air again. and — yeah, if she strains to hear it, the slight skittering of pebbles sent clattering by careful footfalls or the agitated swish of a tail. )

...but probably something big. ( her heart drops into her stomach, then her stomach feels like it's descending down past her feet. she wants to run, but instead sticks out a clammy hand to asuka while still resolutely staring down an unseen predator in the shadows. unspoken urging to just come on, get out of there, we need to go. )

All I've got is a stick.

[ It is, admittedly, a pretty solid walking stick, but it's not the best weapon in the world against a big monster. She seems determined to at least make a go of it, though, even if her pulse is racing and there's some real fear behind those eyes. She glances into the darkness and then, with a touch of reluctance, she grabs Clarke's hand. ]

Let's go- [ It's a mutter, as if the creature might overhear and understand them. What ever it is. She's already trying to hide in the opposite direction. Or what she hopes is the opposite direction. ]

( hey, a good stick is nothing to laugh at; it's a weapon with superior range than the roughly handcrafted knife clarke's got on her belt. this moment smacks as just another moment in a long list of moments she's wished for a gun, but at least asuka's acquiesced and taken her hand. she pulls the other girl the rest of the way out of the alcove, and doesn't argue when asuka hides at an angle behind her. together, wordlessly, they back up from the more ominous gathering of shadows — all the way until they can turn an abrupt corner and pivot to run, except...

clarke really doesn't like what she sees in this new cooridor.

above them, a series of rocky outcroppings jut out from the sides of the maze walls to form stone shelves on either side. big enough for a person to walk on but far above their heads, choking the already limited light down to a slim sliver of moonlight to guide themselves by. the air feels like it's thicker here too, akin to the living heat of an animal den. they're in deep potential shit, they're potentially deep in something dangerous' territory. and as they walk hand in hand, at a brisk pace that borders on a jog, she can't help but feel like there's eyes boring into the top of her skull every time she glances away from the stone rafters.

but they make it a good few yards unbothered.

then a skittering of pebbles fall off the shelves above. and the hollow, sickeningly deep, rattling chuffs of a large cat echoes down to her bone marrow. )

[ Asuka hates the idea of having to depend on anyone for this, but on the other hand... the fear of death is a motivator. She stays close to Clarke, even if she's still not quite sure how to feel about her after their last encounter. Her attention is on their surroundings though - the strange shelves, the sliver of moonlight, the shadows that seem to stretch out to try and engulf them. Like some sort of killer's playground.

Maybe that's exactly what it is. Maybe they're the enrichment for whatever is stalking out in the darkness. She shivers, trying to focus on putting one foot in front of the other. Her fear rises, but it isn't panic. Just adrenaline and a racing heart and the stress of fight or flight. So far, she's in control.

She just has to make it through this place.

Asuka freezes for a second as pebbles scatter and that sound echoes down the hallway.
]

Should we run?

[ There's another chuff, but the animal doesn't make an appearance and she can't hear footfalls. Maybe it's just stalking them. ]

Or - or try and fight?

[ Either way... ]

[personal profile] skaikru 2024-05-17 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
( for clarke, the set up of this hallway strikes a deeper chord of fear than it would if it'd just been some sort of killers playground. no, it's more like... an enclosure in a zoo, with ledges for enrichment and live prey to hunt.

she is silent for a beat after asuka's questions. then a third chuff, closer than before and potentially directly above them, and clarke can feel the blood rushing to her legs. instinct has saved her more often than it's let her down, and with every nerve ending in her body screaming go — )

Running, we're definitely running. Go, go!

( a sharp dig of her heel into the sandy stone floor and clarke takes off, not waiting for any argument or agreement. the hold she has on the other girl's hand has tightened like a vice and she seems fully intent on dragging asuka along if she can't keep up. barely two gasping breaths later, there is the thump and scrape of something big and clawed slamming to the ground right where they'd been and giving chase. )
redheadcarrier: (eyes wide in shock)

[personal profile] redheadcarrier 2024-05-17 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
[ Asuka is taut, wound like a spring, her sixth sense screaming and every part of her desperate for - what? For something to happen? For the tension to snap? Her weight shifts a little as she feels Clarke tense and then - then they're running. She screams, if only because it's something to do, and she runs, stumbling in Clarke's wake, trying to get her legs to move and to keep up with the other woman. She's clinging to her for dear life and she doesn't look back.

Not when she can hear the thump of something large. Not when there's another chuff and then the click of claws on stone. She tries to lengthen her stride, her chest already starting to burn, her heart hammering away as her blood pumps and pumps and her body tries to make her live.
]

Where's - the - exit?
skaikru: (pic#11655190)

[personal profile] skaikru 2024-05-19 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Dunno, ( clarke barely manages to wheeze out in return. the hand she has gripped around asuka's is growing progressively more and more sweaty, a mix of exertion and just outright panic as the clatter-thump of big paws gains on them in the darkness. it sounds close, too close for comfort and no general maze exit or easy measure of salvation in sight.

it is not good knife handling practice, but on a whim she blindly scrabbles for her beltline and yanks a rough-made knife from her waist; slots clammy fingers through the bent guard made out of space ship debris, and if she were one to pray this would be the moment that happened.

but instead of looking towards the sky, clarke makes the very bad choice of glancing over her shoulders. where all she sees is something so big that it eclipses the line of moonlight at their back, and fixes her with bright green eyes that glow unnaturally in the dark. shit. fuck. her own heart hammers uncomfortably hard, like it desires to burst from her ribcage and escape this situation entirely. )

— got magic? ( it's an incomplete question, barely spared oxygen as her legs pump to keep up the pace. but it is still a question, one hopefully asuka can interpret. a fireball would come in handy right now, and once again clarke misses her usual short, red-headed spitfire with a bad attitude. )
redheadcarrier: (Sad.)

[personal profile] redheadcarrier 2024-05-19 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Magic-?

[ The word spills out in a shocked gasp. Which might answer the question all on its own at this point. She isn't looking back - and all she has is her stick still. She swallows hard and tries to breath, glancing up at Clarke with wide eyes. ]

No-!

[ She has no ability to actually do anything helpful but run and she feels keenly helpless. It's a very shitty feeling, one she'd hoped to never feel again. And yet here she is. She tries to focus on the path. Up ahead there's a turn-off - and she has no idea where it leads, but anywhere is better than here, right? ]

Left-!

[ She manages. Is Clarke going to listen? ]

( well, that's disappointing but not unexpected. it is a bit though, after being surrounded by everything from shapeshifters to vampires to mages for the vast majority of the last two years, to suddenly find herself in imminent danger alongside someone else who was just. human. they'll have to make do with a stick and a knife, like their ancestors had done; like the first generation of grounders left behind on earth's radioactive surface had.

clarke can feel the combined sweat on their palms jeopardizing her grasp on asuka's hand, and squeezes to the point of being potentially painful just to ensure she doesn't let the other girl slip away. as for taking directions?

sure, why not? her feet kick up an excessive amount of dust as she braces and cuts an immediate left at the corner. something twangs in her ankle tendons at the abrupt change in direction, but she won't feel it 'til later. around the bend is another stretch of stone hallway, though this one is edged with little stone outcroppings — perches — rather than a full skyward walkway. the world opens up a bit, more moonlight filters through and they can see better. for as much good as that will do; clarke can already feel a stitch forming in her side, and the mad dash of escape has gotten to the point her heartbeat is in her throat and she can't focus on speaking anymore, just sucking in enough air to pump through to her muscles and hopefully move faster. )
redheadcarrier: (ok lets go)

[personal profile] redheadcarrier 2024-05-23 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Up?

[ Asuka manages to gasp through the stitch in her own side and her shortness of breath. All she can think to do is keep running because there's nothing else to do. No clever tricks or secret weapons, just the two of them and no end in side. Behind them there's the scrape of claws and she doesn't look back, won't look back to see what's gaining. ]
