MISSION 002

WHO: Everyone!
WHEN: May 3rd-28th
WHERE: Within the Labyrinth
WHAT: The second Mission
NOTES\WARNINGS: Potential death, violence, injury. Please add additional warnings as needed within threads.

⏵ into the labyrinth ⏴

Aurora's announced time for the mission was correct: four days after, as she had promised, the door to the Labyrinth opens, connected to Etraya's atmospheric bubble by its entrance point. Characters are directed to come to the entrance on May 3rd, and warned that they may want to bring medical supplies, weaponry, and any important artifacts along with them. She warns that large vehicles will not fit within the limited space available, and smaller ones may be difficult to remove, thus advises those to stay behind. Aurora also offers to watch over any companion animals and keep them safe while competitors complete the Labyrinth.

They are given a short amount of time outside of the entrance to speak with one another, to plan and organize themselves, before they are ushered into it in groups of two to four. Once passed the entrance, they'll find that they are unable to turn around and exit out of it: a barrier keeps them from going back into the city proper, and as soon as they are far enough forward, the walls around them shift, closing them in, moving in complex patterns meant to separate them and bring them together.

Characters with extraordinary abilities may find some of them inaccessible: super strength may be downgraded to closer to ordinary strength, magic may prove to be less predictable than it should be, and regardless of how strong, fast, or clever characters are: passing over the Labyrinth walls or destroying them proves to be impossible. While one may be able to run through the pathways at superhuman speeds, the pathways compensate for it by running them in circles, refusing to allow them to make any progress on their own.

⏵ pathways collide ⏴

Junctures of the Labyrinth often present competitors with choices, some that may have consequences: a left turn down a darker path may prove to be harmless, whereas the well-lit path may be full of traps intent on slowing them down: a trip wire that activates a swinging massive axe, or arrows that shoot straight out of the wall as soon as one gets close enough.

Other junctures may present characters with choices that have consequences: they can choose the shortest pathway, but at great personal risk to themselves or their partner (ie, you can go this way, but your arm isn’t going with you) or they can choose the lengthy pathway full of traps and trials they’ll have to surpass to get to the end.

⏵ balancing act ⏴

The pathway opens up into a massive space, but it's not one with an easy path out: instead, competitors will find an obstacle course that will not let them continue forward until they complete it. Many of the tasks involve things that one cannot do on their own: they must walk across multiple wooden boards balanced precariously on a tall beam, but to ensure it's balanced, there must be one person on both sides of the boards and make sure that they're walking on the board in just the right space to ensure their weight doesn't cause it to sink too far on the opposite side. If a smaller child is on one end, they may want to stand significantly further away from the beam than the larger person on the other half.

⏵ help! i'm bleeding! ⏴

A large garden area spawns off of a pathway. The peaceful chirping of birds can be heard among blooming cherry blossom trees, and it all seems utterly peaceful and calm. An area one might wish to take a breather in, enjoy the sunshine reflecting from above, and get a good nap in. Or would, except a companion bot whose abdomen is covered in ketchup appears to be struggling across the ground, crying out for help. They state they are bleeding profusely and require immediate medical attention, otherwise, they will die.

The companion bot also carries a bag of medical supplies and MREs, which player characters are welcome to utilize. The pathway out of this open space will not open until after the companion bot no longer states they are dying. Whether it's because they're "dead", or because those who came across them offered "medical attention" and patched them up until they've stated they're good and no longer need assistance - well, both will technically suffice.

⏵ choice is an illusion ⏴

After walking down an additional pathway, characters will find themselves trapped within a glass box. In front of them is a pedestal with two buttons: one red, and one green, as well as a tablet above it displaying the image of another group of characters. The tablet states hindering them will help you. You may either choose to make the second group's time through the maze more difficult, or hinder your progress by pressing the green button and helping the other group forward.

Characters are given two minutes to decide which path to take; the timer, on the tablet, counts down regardless of any attempt to break or hack it.

Pressing the green button will drop several squishmallows into the glass box. Inside one of them is a key that unlocks the roof of the glass box. Pressing the red button, while it promises to hinder the other group, actually. . . causes a toxic yellow gas to flood the glass box. The gas will burn the lungs of those who breathe it in, but it also begins slowly melting the glass box. This gas will make breathing difficult for the next 24 hours, but will not kill those who inhale it. Healing factors will not offset the gas.

⏵ who deserves the knife? ⏴

A group of two characters will walk through one corridor and find themselves strapped to two chairs, the backs of which are leaning against each other. In front of the both of them are drills, slowly approaching their chests. They cannot go sideways but can push forward and backward. They can push backward and get themselves further away from the threat of injury - forcing the person behind them to suffer but allowing themselves to escape - or they can push into the drill and free the person they're with. Alternatively, they can choose not to push either way, potentially sacrificing them both.

Three options, but they are left with minimal time to decide as the drill continues to press closer. If they choose to go out together, they'll find that as the drills press against their chest - they simply stop. Minimal blood will be spilled, and they will have all the time they need to figure out how to squirm out of their bindings.

⏵ the Siren waits for thee ⏴

A seemingly harmless pathway turns into much more trouble than it's worth. A few steps through a corridor, and suddenly competitors will find the floor falling out from under them, revealing a body of water and - no solid ground on either side of it. There are the walls, but they lack any good climbing holds. Within the water are numerous Sirens - beautiful androgynous creatures that sing soft songs meant to entice others into following them deep into the water. While they may look beautiful, their mouths are full of razor-sharp teeth, and their intentions certainly aren't innocent. However, the Sirens can only touch competitors once they have initiated touch first. They will do their best to encourage this: holding out their hands, crying out for help, pretending to drown, or trying to coax them into coming in close enough for a kiss. As long as they remain on the path, they're harmless. But the moment they reach out for the Sirens... getting away from them will not be easy. Their tails are powerful, built for moving swiftly throughout the water and dragging others along with them. They bite hard and will dig their teeth deep into flesh to discourage struggling.

If one gets captured by them? They're lunch. Or worse yet: if they get bitten but manage to escape, they may find themselves becoming a bit.. scaley around the neck, eyes shifting color to a too-soft green, and an almost impossible-to-resist urge to take a bite out of their friends.

This effect will continue until May 28th regardless of when the character reaches the end of the Labyrinth. After May 28th, they will find that their scales slowly begin to shed, their eyes begin to turn back to their normal shade, and any other new features slowly turn back to how they were before they were infected.

⏵ don't forget your ball of twine ⏴

The Labyrinth is large, and there are many challenges around each corner. There may be space for breaks in between monsters, challenges, riddles, places to sit and recuperate between battles and mind games. It's not all chaos and challenges meant to test one's strength of will.

⏵ NOTES ⏴

May's mission is completing a massive Labyrinth. All characters must enter the Labyrinth; whether or not they participate once they're inside is up to them, but no one will be permitted to stay behind in the city.

The duo who completes the Labyrinth first will be allowed to assist in choosing the next mission. Sign-ups for this are here. We will contact the chosen characters on May 13th.

This mission will cover the time between May 3rd and May 28th. After May 28th, any characters who have not yet exited the Labyrinth will be gathered by the companion bots and brought back into the city. The companion bots will be aiming for nonviolent intervention. If more is needed, please let us know here.

The first to exit will be returning to the city on May 15th.

There will be powercapping during this mission, but the extent of which is fully up to players. We want the Labyrinth to be challenging but don't want to hinder gameplay too much. If you have any questions relating to this or want assistance coming up with ways to powercap your character, please feel free to ask us here. We will be largely leaving this up to player discretion.

Food is scarce within the Labyrinth, but not impossible to find. There are chests (or maybe they're mimics?) strewn throughout with various useful items. One might have a sword, another might have a fresh chicken nugget Happy Meal from McDonalds. Or an entire birthday cake, candles included.

Large vehicles will not fit in the Labyrinth and must be left behind in the city.

Numerous challenges are throughout the Labyrinth. You are welcome to make your own, but we will also provide several you may utilize! Please feel free to throw down wildcards, or your own challenges into your prompts! The limitation is that characters must remain themselves throughout the challenges. There are no mirror replicas, nothing within the Labyrinth will affect their personalities or core values. It’s meant to challenge, not change them.

Deaths that occur within the Labyrinth will last 24 hours. Please report these on our Death Tracker.

All new locations will appear after player characters have returned to the city. Feel free to note the differences from the May 3rd map, versus what characters will be returning to on May 15th.

So far, so good!

[ Fabian couldn't be a bigger contrast with the other guy right now. Sure, he also definitely looks like he's been wandering around in this maze for days now, though he somehow seems to be looking a little less grimy.

(Maybe he's had some siren-related mishaps and ended up in the water some point along the way..)

It's mostly the energy he's radiating that seems different. By all accounts, Fabian should be just as tired and done as anyone else here in the maze, and yet he smiles at Krouse like it's his first day in here. Like the boy's still got energy to pass around for days. He's pushed all the fatigue down, because he knows showing that attitude in front of people isn't going to make things better for anyone. Not for himself - because it's not the sort of impression he'd like anyone to have of him - and not for others - since he's a bard, he inspires, and that means he's got to keep his attitude up to cheer others on.

Hence the sheer enthusiasm he greets the other with. Fabian stops to shrug his pack off his back for a moment, dropping it to the ground. There's a sword hanging off his belt, and a strange sheet wrapped around his shoulders and upper arms - almost like a jacket, except for the fact that it definitely just looks like loose fabric. ]

And how about you? [ Grabbing a bottle from his pack, he raises it to his lips to take a gulp. ] Hanging in there so far? Need a partner for the next challenge?
equivo: (pic#17106068)

[personal profile] equivo 2024-05-06 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
[ That's an only mildly instantly semi-irritating amount of good mood to be throwing around. It's balanced out by the new guy's evident levels of preparation and skill, given how he's kitted out like - well, like an actual intrepid explorer.

Who is, apparently, an elf or half-elf. A dashing, one-eyed, conspicuously roguishly good-looking elf or half-elf with a winning grin. With all the peculiar and outright bizarre people Krouse has encountered in the last two years, it's a little odd to be thrown by the appearance of someone unexpectedly fantastical instead of mutated. ]

Hanging in there. [ He agrees, turning up the animation he puts into his voice to approach perhaps a quarter of his pointy earred new acquaintance's energy. ] And I wouldn't say no to a team up.

My name's Krouse. [ He'd offer his hand to shake, but there's the water bottle situation; he'll give him a few seconds. ] Great to run into someone again. I lost my last partner in a hedge maze, if you can believe it. Mazes inside the maze.
maximumlegend: (wager all you've got)

[personal profile] maximumlegend 2024-05-09 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[ The guy seems to be hit by a realisation hard enough that - for a second - it almost looks like he's choking on his water. Thankfully he manages to swallow the gulp before he can truly start to choke on it, closing his water bottle back up and dumping it on the ground next to his bag so he can instead start to step over in Krouse's direction, the grin on his face only widening.

Sorry, Krouse - there's only more of that energy coming your way now. ]

Krouse!

[ Fabian says the name like he's greeting an old friend he hasn't seen in thirty years, not someone he has spoken literally once to. And online. ]

It's Fabian! Your Bloodrush pal! [ Once he's reached Krouse, there's not even the time for the latter to offer Fabian his hand. Because the half-elf is already grabbing a hold of it. Not for a regular handshake though - no, no, instead he's using the hand, once he's grabbed it with his own, to pull the other closer, knocking their joint hands against his chest (those pecs are rock-hard, Krouse, no soft cushion here) in the most bro-like move before he lets go of the other. ] Who can believe we managed to run into each other out here? That has got to be fate, right?
equivo: (pic#17106069)

[personal profile] equivo 2024-05-09 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[ The thing is, this is obviously embarrassing. Krouse wouldn't be caught dead initiating a gesture this unironically 'cool', some intricate jock ritual designed to let them knock each other around without starting an actual fight. If he saw anyone else doing this, his eyes would roll out of his head and go looking for the exit of the labyrinth all on their own, just to get away from the scene of the social crime.

But in the moment, before his brain can catch up, all Krouse feels is a lurch of surprise that dissolves into an oddly warm wash of recognition. He's awkward in Fabian's grip, arm stiff like he doesn't know what to do with it, but he doesn't fight it past a moment's uncertain freeze. ]

Hey.

[ A standard greeting between boys of a certain age and casualness, capable of being inflected in a hundred different ways. This one says, more or less: good to see you, too.

With new context, Krouse reevaluates. For one thing, this wasn't exactly what he was picturing when imagining hellspawn, but that's easy to get over. The biggest shift is that he's slightly less annoyed by Fabian now that he knows it's him, some of the friction rounded off by passing familiarity. ]

Must be. [ They'd better fucking hope it's not. Fate and Krouse have a less than convivial relationship. ] Glad to see you're still in one piece. But of course you would be, right?

[ He's barely even being that sarcastic. If anyone was going to be able to handle the dungeon crawl, it'd be one of the guys who specifically trained for dungeon crawls. ]
maximumlegend: (Default)

[personal profile] maximumlegend 2024-05-13 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course!

[ There's something about this that does scream peacock jock ritual. The way Fabian speaks, the way he moves on his feet like he's got some excess energy going on (which you imagine wouldn't be the case, considering just how exhausting this entire maze is, but for an extreme extrovert like Fabian there's nothing that gives him more energy than meeting people, especially familiar faces), the way he puffs out his chest a little bit as he says that.

Yet it doesn't seem like it's used in a way to bring anyone else down, like what typically happens with jock energy. Instead he's just radiating a smile at Krouse even now, his happiness not waning in the slightest. ]

This stuff is like what we do at school on the daily. [ .. well, maybe not the daily..

But it's still a statement that's not all that far off from the truth, depressingly enough. ]

Obstacle courses? Monsters? Puzzles? Been there, done that! [ He may be punching the air at every single one of those last four words. You know, for dramatic effect. ] How about you? You seem to be doing pretty alright!

[ Read: he's not bloodied or dead, so clearly Krouse is doing fine, right. ]
equivo: (pic#17106076)

[personal profile] equivo 2024-05-14 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
[ The biggest difference between Fabian and what Krouse associates with his type so far is that Fabian seems to want to bring everyone in on the good times. In an odd way, it makes him think of another so-called popular kid he once knew, and how unlike the stereotype she was once you got to know her.

It's an association with mixed feelings attached. Better not to linger on it. Krouse sweeps it aside and refocuses on the now, shifting his weight back slightly on his heels in unconscious echo of Fabian's driven exuberance. ]

I've been getting by. [ His smile cracks upward on one side. ] I wouldn't say it's just like the simulations, but it's not not-like the simulations.

Video game joke.

[ In case Fabian doesn't get it, which is more of a gesture at inclusiveness than Krouse usually bothers with. He doesn't know what the gaming environment is like in fantasy world. Maybe they're all about office simulators and coffee shop exploration games. ]

But - hey. Where's your party?

[ Krouse asks the question before he stops to consider that there might be an unpleasant answer, but it's too late to take it back now. ]
maximumlegend: (i need more)

[personal profile] maximumlegend 2024-05-19 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Thanks for the clarification, Krouse, because Fabian definitely had absolutely no idea what you were talking about just now. Though there's not much time to linger on the joke anyway in the wake of what the other guy moves on to say.

Judging by the way Fabian's shoulders sag a little, it's definitely an unpleasant question, at the very least. Though he doesn't look absolutely devastated either, so it's not likely that he had to watch them get devoured by something in the maze either. No, it's just-- ]

I lost them fairly quickly after first entering.

[ Judging by the way he says it, just that by itself is enough to bother him. They're a party for a reason, after all. If Leviathan taught him anything, it's that it's no good when he doesn't stick together with his friends. ]

It makes me unsure what the entire purpose of this maze even is. If we are meant to work together, then why would it constantly attempt to separate us from the people around us? If it wasn't for the fact that there are so many people in this maze that it's hard to not eventually run into someone, it would be isolating us. [ A thought Fabian!! Does not like!! He's definitely frowning. ]
equivo: (pic#17106080)

[personal profile] equivo 2024-05-20 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Krouse twists his mouth in genuine, if subdued, sympathy. He's been there, and there's few things as inconvenient as losing track of your team members in the middle of a job. Given Fabian's assertive attitude (to put it lightly), Krouse is assuming he's the de facto party leader, which just compounds things.

That it's not his fault, given everything he's correctly pointing out about the way the labyrinth keeps peeling people apart, is something Krouse knows doesn't help. Your responsibility is your responsibility, whatever happens. ]

That's rough.

[ He frowns a little too, before he catches himself, flipping the expression upside down. ]

If I had to guess, the point is probably to make us have to cooperate with new people. What the point of that is - [ a shrug. ]

But wherever they are, they're trained to handle this, right? Party splits happen. You just have to adjust and keep going. You'll run back into them eventually.

[ He doesn't actually know that, but he's not dropping 'unless they disappear forever in the maze' into the middle of a pep talk, and there's also no reason to clarify that he means they might have to meet back up on the outside. Fabian's not -

Well, Fabian might be a little stupid, but he's not that stupid. He's probably thought about it already. ]
maximumlegend: (can't believe i was wounding you)

[personal profile] maximumlegend 2024-05-26 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
... I know.

[ But judging by the deep breath he exhales at the same time he says those words, it's not an idea Fabian particularly likes. Sure, Adaine and Riz are both capable. They'll probably be fine. Adaine's the most powerful out of all three of them in Fabian's opinion, and Riz can always hide incredibly well when shit hits the fan. If anything, Fabian is probably in trouble the most from this entire splitting up scenario.

And yet-- rather than thinking about that, he just keeps feeling worried about them. It's been such a long while since they weren't at least together in shit like this. ]

Sorry, man. [ He offers Krouse an apologetic smile, shrugging like he's also trying to shrug the feeling off at the same time.

He has to be stronger than this. ]

I didn't mean to drag down the mood. You must have people you're missing too, right? So maybe the best thing we can do is make a move on from here together and see if can get any closer to the exit? Surely two capable guys like us should be able to tackle whatever is ahead, right? Do you want to see what trouble we can run into?
equivo: (pic#17106068)

[personal profile] equivo 2024-05-26 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
[ It's convenient that Fabian is shouldering the burden of shoring himself up, because Krouse isn't sure where he'd start if it was up to him. He can float some platitudes, but he doesn't know the guy well enough to know what would necessarily work.

But it's uncomfortable to be this close to it and not have something ready. This is why he usually tried to stay out of other people's drama, if 'drama' is what you can call 'missing teammates in a life and temporary death situation'. He feels a little on the back foot, and not in a way that spurs him to coming up with a clever solution. ]

I don't, actually.

[ Have people. He says it with an answering smile and shrug, mirroring Fabian's expression back to him with a brighter spin. ]

Kind of takes a load off my mind, if I'm honest. And it frees me up to get invested in other people's problems, so win-win all around. [ It's a joke, obviously. Just lightening the mood. ] You're not dragging down the mood. But I do like the sound of getting into some trouble.
maximumlegend: (satisfied in grandiose dreams)

[personal profile] maximumlegend 2024-06-01 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Oh. Damn. Honestly, despite Krouse spinning it as such a light thing, Fabian thinks the other's situation is way worse than his own. Sure, it sucks to not know how your friends are doing in a maze that has proven to be capable of literally killing you, but he thinks it'd suck even more to be stuck in a place like this and not even have anyone to miss in the first place.

Not that he mentions anything about it. If Krouse is talking about it that lightly, he probably doesn't want Fabian to make A Thing out of it. So rather than remarking on it, he steps over towards the other. At first it seems like he's going to pass right by him so they can move on in this maze, but then he first stops next to Krouse, lifting his hand to give the other guy a playful punch in the shoulder.

.. the punch may be just a tad too strong. Sorry, Krouse. The risks of hanging around a jock, honestly. ]

Okay, dude. No need to flatter me. Or if you're going to do that, make the flattery a little more intense.

[ Someone is apparently not afraid of asking for a compliment.. though his tone and expression make it seem enough like he's just joking along. ]

Fabian Aramais Seacaster knows when he is dragging down the mood! But no worries, I am certain that the moment we pass into the next thing the maze has readied for us, I will be able to show you my true heroism! [ .. a beat, and then he adds: ] And I did kind of make a bet with another guy that the loser has to kneel and admit defeat to the other if they get out of the maze last, so-- uh, you know. It'd help me if we could get a move on and all. [ Just saying. ]
equivo: (there ain't nothing that can save me)

[personal profile] equivo 2024-06-02 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Krouse has had people throw harder punches his way. It's a little funny that he still braces for this one, some instincts about flying knuckles far older than his stint as a professional criminal.

But it's not bad. It mostly just rocks him to the side, the brief jolt of contact more surprising than painful. He huffs out an exhale and shoots Fabian a look more amused than disapproving, whatever the faux arch of his eyebrows has to say about it. Then Fabian rattles off his little inspirational speech, and it's all amusement, punctuated with a short laugh. ]

Well, we can't have that.

[ He falls into step with Fabian, moving along in the direction he chooses. He doesn't have a better one in mind yet. ]

How's it going to look if the Blood Rush captain ends up kneeling in front of some chump? And on his debut mission, no less. [ It'd be a blow to the competitive spirit. ] I'm not exactly looking to set up a summer home here either.

And you're vastly underestimating the buoyancy of my mood, but if you want to take it as flattery, be my guest. Free points for me.
maximumlegend: (hard-headed)

[personal profile] maximumlegend 2024-06-07 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Krouse is so lucky that he's dealing with Fabian of all people here. It's just about the only person in the world who won't give another guy shit for saying stuff like the buoyancy of my mood. Because Fabian "fancy speak" Seacaster would probably say the exact same thing.

Instead he focuses on what came before it, saying: ]

Exactly! I'm not planning on kneeling for that guy!

[ Nothing bad about Damian, though. This is only about the spirit of competition and all that.

He glances over his shoulder for a moment at the way the walls seem to be closing up behind them, but he doesn't seem too concerned by it. It's just part of this maze. Fabian has seen it plenty of times by now, figuring that it shouldn't separate them just yet as long as he sticks close by the other guy's side. ]

So if we see some monster up ahead, we're going to fight it and move on!

[ ... ]

I mean, you can fight a monster, right? [ He may only be looking to see whether or not Krouse has a weapon on him at all.. To Fabian's credit, he definitely comes from a world where a larger than average number of people are totally prepared to fight monsters. He can't help but assume, especially with Krouse's relatively casual attitude. ]
equivo: (pic#17106067)

[personal profile] equivo 2024-06-10 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
[ The circle of inspiration is such that Krouse talks the way he does because of indulging in the type of nerd media that Fabian lives out every day of his actual life, a cosmic coincidence fortunately so far lost on both of them.

In the present moment, Krouse scoffs lightly as he readjusts his bag again, listening to the subtle shifts of the labyrinth behind them as Fabian does the visual check. ]

I can fight a monster. [ He confirms. ] Maybe even two, if I get on a roll.

[ If he sounds a little cocky about it, he thinks it's earned. Direct combat isn't his preference, but he can hold his own when he has to. He gives Fabian's appraisal of him a little sidelong glance, judges what it's about, and flicks on a smirk. ]

I have a gun. A less elegant weapon for an uncivilized age, I know, but we can't all have studied the blade.
maximumlegend: (that gun is loaded)

[personal profile] maximumlegend 2024-06-15 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He scoffs. ]

Man, my friend uses a gun too.

[ Even though Fabian definitely seems like he might come from a place where people just.. straight up don't use guns.. There's definitely some sort of weird mix of modern teen and archaic person going on within Fabian's attitude, after all. And it doesn't help that he's using a sword in the first place, considering that seems like a terrible idea in a world where people could also just shoot you. With a gun.

Yet he doesn't seem to see the problem in this. Instead he's taking Krouse's admission in, opting to just believe the other when he says he can handle a monster or two. ]

So I imagine that means you aren't quite as used to close combat. [ He figures that's at least a good thing to know before they end up in some sort of trouble here in the maze. Fabian is so used to adjusting himself to his friends' fighting styles that this is the first time in a while where he's had to consider an entirely different person whose style he doesn't know.

And if Krouse does function better at a longer range, then Fabian knows he's going to definitely have to try and keep whatever is in this maze drawn to himself instead. ]
equivo: (pic#17106072)

[personal profile] equivo 2024-06-16 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
[ That's interesting. Krouse has a ready list of questions springing to mind - the type of gun, what it uses as ammunition, if there's magic involved - but those strike him as things he can save for later. And possibly ask the person who actually has the gun.

It's not impossible to visualize. He's seen enough magitek style stuff to have a reference point, anyway.

In the present moment, their tactical concerns are a little more immediate. Krouse doesn't exactly slip into grim seriousness, which usually strikes him as an affectation, but he's not devil-may-care, either. ]

Close combat isn't my preference, no. [ He can throw a punch and take one, and he's better at the later than the former. ] What I do works better at range.

[ He considers a choice for a few seconds, then reaches into his pocket to pull out his Swiss army knife and a foil-wrapped granola bar. ]

I never got around to telling you what that is, did I? [ He transfers the granola bar to his other hand, holding both palms out flat. He knows perfectly well he didn't get around to it. ] Want to see?
maximumlegend: (all of the boys)

[personal profile] maximumlegend 2024-06-18 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Fabian is about to tell the other guy to not sweat it, that he was already prepared to the sole frontline fighter here with the other physically-oriented guy from their party not being here--

But then Krouse is definitely distracting him by pulling out.. some stuff? Is that candy. Is it the candy he's supposed to be focusing on here or the other thing? Fabian isn't all that sure, especially with his attention span.

So rather than remarking anything, or asking any pre-emptive questions, he just says: ]

Sure.

[ He'll watch whatever little display you've got for him, Krouse! ]

[ Sharing his power is always a contextual thing here. It's not like it was back on Bet, where there were only so many standard responses to expect. In Etraya, he has to make an individual judgment call about everyone, weighing what he knows about them to figure out the right approach to the reveal.

With Fabian, it comes easy. He has a good feeling about how he'll take it, informed by his enthusiasm and his eager interest in - well, a lot of things. He smiles crookedly at him, a gleam of confidence in his eyes, and looks down at his props.

They switch places, seamless and instant. ]

I teleport things.

[ The next move is an impulse. He hasn't tried it unprompted on anyone since he got here. People don't always take it well. It's just that he kind of wants a real wow factor.

He glances sideways, and he and Fabian switch places as neatly as the granola bar and Swiss army knife. It happens without sensation or interruption in Fabian's stride. One second, he's where he was, and the next, he's on the opposite side. ]

And people.

[ Krouse looks back the other way, smile stopped short of a grin by virtue of slightly comic modesty. ]

[ Even though this is a guy who's used to magic just being a regular thing in daily life, Fabian still looks kind of confused. Like it's taking his brain a few moments to realise what's happened, even though Krouse is very clearly explaining it with his words here.

He blinks rapidly, then shakes his head, and only then does the situation fully seem to dawn on Fabian.

Damn. Maybe it's since Krouse only teleported him such a short distance, but he didn't notice it happened at all. Unlike when Kristen decides to Plane Shift them or something. ]

Teleport? [ He finally asks, having now gotten over his initial slight surprise. ] Like the spell?

[ Sorry, Krouse. This boy definitely sees the world in D&D terms. But even though Fabian seems to take his power more as a normal thing than most others might - sorry for the lack of initial excitement, Krouse, maybe it'll kick in in a moment or so - at least he doesn't seem put off by it in the slightest either. ]

Are you sure you're not some kind of wizard?

Like the spell, with some catches.

[ Fabian's lack of awe doesn't break Krouse's enthusiasm. Getting compared to a spellcaster is a good thing. He tucks his props back into his pocket - with a brief consideration of pulling out his pack of cigarettes, but he's trying to pace himself on those, so he leaves them where his fingers brush against them - and gets back to explaining. ]

It's at will, no limits on use. I need to have something to switch whatever I'm moving with, but that's about it.

[ There are a few other catches, but he'll leave them out for now. It's not that he thinks Fabian will use them against him, more that he doesn't want to highlight the shortcomings while he's talking himself up. ]

And I wasn't a wizard the last time I checked. [ He grins. ] I'm a parahuman. It's more like - do they have psionics where you're from? People whose powers come from their minds?

Damn.

[ That's definitely coming out of Fabian's mouth when Krouse says that there are no limits on use. Imagine being able to just use spells whenever, not even having to take long rests? If only the other's spell wasn't limited to this single one, then Krouse truly would be the greatest wizard of their age.

But even with just one spell going for him, Fabian still looks sufficiently impressed by the idea. The only thing that snaps him out of it a little is that question he's being asked, one that seems to force him to think for a moment. ]

You mean like sorcerers? [ He pauses, wondering if he has to explain that term to Krouse. He did know what wizards were, but just in case, a half-gestured explanation-- ] Uh, you know, people with innate magic, as opposed to wizards who have to learn magic.

Kind of like that, but not really magic. And it's not strictly innate. Parahuman powers manifest under stress, but in theory, anyone with the right kind of brain can get one.

[ Or, if you have the right tool to induce them, you can end up with the right kind of brain whether you started with it or not. That's the theory Krouse landed on, at least.

But he's glad that it's clicking. The lack of an upper limit on use is something Krouse appreciates about his power, although his metric of evaluation was video game skill cooldowns and not long rests. ]

Although I guess that's just semantics, except that a dispel magic spell wouldn't do anything to me. You'd need a trump power for that. Which this place apparently has, because my range has been cut back in here. [ Which is a weird, claustrophobic feeling, seeing things he can't touch - and a feeling he doesn't really want to linger on in any depth. ] Have you noticed anything like that for you? With your magic? I'm just wondering how many overlapping different effects are at play here.
maximumlegend: (you just can't see)

[personal profile] maximumlegend 2024-07-06 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Hold on, Krouse. You're throwing a whole lot of stuff in there that Fabian has some questions about. Like-- what the hell is a trump power? Just any power that's more powerful than your own, or something like that? Is this something he doesn't know about because he isn't a wizard?

His confusion will have to wait though, in the light of Krouse's own question. Even if Fabian doesn't have much helpful information to provide here. ]

Honestly, I haven't noticed much of a difference. But my magic isn't all that impressive.

[ Look, that's just objective reality. Not him putting himself down. He just has very basic magic, especially compared to people who are more focused on spell casting during their battles! ]

So maybe the people in charge here don't want to deal with magic that's too powerful. You should ask my friend Adaine sometime. She'd know. [ Fabian doesn't know anyone who has as strong magic as Adaine does, after all. ]

.. uh, but aside from all of that.. [ Sorry, Krouse. He has to return to this one, because it's weirder to him than any of the teleporting itself. ] What sort of brain do you need to have for it?

[ That's the part that seems weird to him. Especially when that's definitely not how it works in Fabian's own world, and he's kind of coming up blank trying to imagine.. different kinds of brains..

What sort of brains do you have, Krouse?? Pal? Bro? ]
equivo: (there ain't nothing that can save me)

[personal profile] equivo 2024-07-12 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
[ Krouse nods along to Fabian's touching on magic as if he grasps it perfectly. In his own personal, internal defence, he thinks he does get the gist of it. There's been nothing Fabian, Riz, or Adaine have said that makes him suspect their version of magic has any particularly surprising twists to it - which is an assumption he makes a note to watch himself on. There's going to be something, eventually.

But it's probably not going to come up in this context, so he sets that aside for the moment. Powerful magic being more impacted than minor magic tracks with everything else. He can't think of how there might be an exception that either of them need to worry about just yet. ]

You say that like it sounds weird.

[ Krouse flashes a toothy grin to show that he knows it does, in fact, sound weird. It's also meant to serve as a little bit of reassuring deflection before he soft pedals the follow up. ]

It's an extra lobe in the brain. Like how you have those parts that control moving your arms and legs, right? [ He hopes Fabian is aware of that, because he's not sure how stellar his neurology knowledge is outside of this specific topic. ] This is one that controls using powers. It's not active in most people, kind of like an appendix. [ Do elves have an appendix? ] But if you trigger - get a power - it turns on, starts developing.

That's all it does, though. My brain is otherwise bog standard, unfortunately. Be nice if it did come with anything else as a bonus.
maximumlegend: (better bite your tongue)

[personal profile] maximumlegend 2024-07-16 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh. Okay.

[ He just.. seems to accept this, huh. Even though it kind of sounds like a weird story, even to someone who comes from a world like Fabian's. A lot of weird stuff happens back there, but people being born with extra parts to their brain that let them use magic is just one of the few weird things that actually isn't common back there.

But with how little Fabian knows about how brains work, and with how much he's used to learning new, strange information all the time, this feels like something he can just absorb. Sure, Krouse has extra brains.

In fact-- ]

Good for you, man! You are big-brained!

[ Look at this - very literal - compliment he can give him now. Fabian seems to think it's hilarious, judging by the grin on his face, and the jock back pat he's giving the other only a moment later. ]

Though I imagine other people in your world must feel incredibly cheated. I know I would, if the only reason I couldn't have some sort of power was merely because I was born with less brains than someone else! [ In that case, Fabian definitely would be screwed.. There's not a whole lot going on up there..

But who knows if he's even aware of that irony about it, honestly. ]
