FEBRUARY MINGLE

WHAT: The arrival of newcomers, a mini mission, and some new city features!
NOTES\WARNINGS:
WHEN: February 14th - March
WHERE: Etraya
WHAT: The arrival of newcomers, a mini mission, and some new city features!
NOTES\WARNINGS:
![]() ⏵ arrival ⏴ Welcome to Etraya! Arrival goes as expected - characters awaken on hospital beds and are offered an explanation of their situation: that they have arrived in the city of Etraya, and they are their world's only hope. They are welcome to wander the hospital if they would like to - the upper floors are mostly empty, full of pristine hallways and numerous rooms filled with supplies, cots, and things one would expect from a relatively average 21st-century hospital. In the hospital's lobby are several party tables set out with miscellaneous baked goods: croissants, cookies, breads, cake slices, as well as tea and coffee to accompany them - or hot chocolate, for those who are opposed to the other offerings. Outside the hospital, the last remnants of snow are melting in the sunlight as the weather begins to warm up. It's still chilly enough one might want to put on a coat, but not so cold a jacket is necessary for wandering around without freezing off one's fingers. We hope you enjoy your stay. ![]() ⏵ heroes return ⏴ As the Quantum Rail train glides to a halt, returning passengers step out onto familiar ground - the train station, right where they had initially begun their mission. When exiting the station, their earpieces vibrate, indicating the automatic download of a detailed map which highlights key locations, transit paths, and notable landmarks. As Aurora promised, she had been working on a few renovations around Etraya! A sleek trolley system now winds through Etraya, following clearly marked pathways through the city bubble to make travel across the city smoother. However, the trolley only moves one way, eternally following the loop Aurora has set it on. And because of this, it takes six hours to complete it's loop all the way around. Don't miss your stop! Pets and animals have been returned to their usual preferred areas, some awaiting the arrival of their owners, and others keeping to themselves in the forested areas throughout Etraya. Beyond the small upgrades, things seem relatively unchanged - until one familiar sign catches the eye. One marked by four vertical lines, methodically crossed out one by one: the final slash has now been drawn through. The tally is complete. What it indicates has yet to be made clear, but it has to mean something, right? No one would go through the effort of making an ominous-sounding sign without following through. ![]() ⏵ love in the air ⏴ This Valentines Day, Aurora and the companion bots have opted to try something a little different: they have scattered mystery valentines across the city. Hidden within mailboxes, tucked into cafe menus, slipped under doors, on the outside of high windows for those wall-crawlers to spot. There are countless of these little slips of papers, strewn throughout the city. And within each valentine, is a challenge or gesture to complete. Please feel free to make these up yourselves as long as they fit in with the theme! Some examples include:
While not mandatory, completing five tasks will earn an individual an additional ten points to use towards anything they would like! Each little Valentine is signed "Your Secret Admirer. ♡", and some of them may even be addressed to specific individuals. Don't be surprised, Eddie, if you see one or two that are specifically addressed to you lurking around your collection of chicken friends! And while most of these are harmless, some of the valentines cards come with effects for those who come into contact with the paper. Perhaps they thought it was a piece of garbage, or were just kicking it out of the way rather than intending on taking part. It doesn't matter! They get to join in on the fun, too. Heart Eyes - your pupils literally turn into hearts for a few hours, making it hard to focus on anything other than things (or people) you find attractive. Love-Struck Stammer - You can only speak in poetic compliments or romantic declarations, regardless of whom you're speaking to. Chocolate Bliss - Everything feels good. Simple. Easy. As if there's nothing in the world to concern yourself with. You feel happy, without any concerns or worry. Rose-Tinted Vision - everything looks soft and romantic, as if you're in a romance novel. You know the ones. Magnetic Attraction - regardless of what you had been doing, you suddenly find yourself unable to leave the side of the person closest to you. Had you been eating chocolates while walking down the street? Well, have fun getting stuck to the guy who'd been out for a jog! Serenade Syndrome - you find it impossible to resist the urge to sing your words, turning all conversations into love ballads. Heartstrings - A thread appears, connecting you to someone close by who you share many similarities too. Perhaps you had never met this person before, but the threads tied around your pinky fingers that refuse to let go until you allow yourself to open up to them clearly means you should be a little more familiar with them. Love is in the air—or maybe just a bit of well-intended chaos! 💕 Welcome back from the mission, and welcome to Etraya for our newcomers! We've tried to keep this log simple for an easy introduction, as well as some downtime for our mission-goers who worked hard to solve the Quantum Rail mystery. There is something else going on, but. . . well, no one seems to know what! The computer that had been on the lower floor of the hospital is now missing, and Aurora may seem a little flustered as she flits around Etraya, in search of something. at his comment about Vincent, she smiles.]
We're from the same world. Or universe, I guess is the proper term. Can't keep up. But it's the same state and everything. I'm from ten years earlier than he is apparently. Not a fan of him? [she asks because well, she assumes most are not. Vincent is not a good man and one might consider that awful to say after he, very literally, died for her. but she wasn't under any illusion that he'd died because he cared about her. no, he died for his own reasons and she just happened to help those reasons along. Maria understood that.]

Otherwise I don't know enough to judge. [ Finding him personally annoying is not enough to condemn him as a person, Harold is well aware, especially if he's going around saving people he knows. ] So you're from the same place, but met here?
[ Since Shaw showed up he's become all too familiar with timeline discrepancies, but Maria's making it sound like they didn't know each other before. ]
no subject
Yeah. It's kind of a head trip, huh? We met for the first time here. Never thought he'd be the type to take a knife for a girl. But that's Vincent for you.
no subject
I still wish to ban him from commenting on any future network posts I make, [ Harold says pleasantly, ] but I do realize people I dislike can nonetheless have redeeming qualities. A person is large and contains multitudes.
[ Walt Whitman. ]
no subject
I won't tell him you said a thing because then that would make him worse. [mentioning Harold would only make it more annoying for the poor man.] I wouldn't say Vincent doing what he did for me was a redemption. He had his motives. [which sounds bad but she knows Vincent isn't a good person. he didn't die for Maria because he wanted her alive simply because he cared. no, he wanted her alive so she wouldn't lose any qualities that benefited him. Vincent had told her to her face even before the train that she couldn't die for that very reason.]
I'm grateful for what he did. It was still a sacrifice he made for me and...[and now it's choking her up just a little. she was trying not to get too emotional and she eats the chocolate, trying to laugh it off.] Sorry. He was dying in my arms. Not like I didn't feel a thing. It's just...Vincent is Vincent.
no subject
Anyone dying in your arms is traumatic, [ Harold says somberly, not wanting to downplay that at all. He won't ask her to relive it and process those emotions with him, but he has no trouble empathizing with how that experience must have affected her no matter who it was. ]
In my experience, actions matter more than intent. Whatever his motives, he died to protect you and Ms. Mason.
[ Harold has become thoroughly aware that intentions really do mean very little compared to the outcome you cause. It's cold comfort to hear someone meant well; his own excuses to himself in that regard became increasingly hollow over time until now they've shattered completely. If that's true, then the reverse must also be true: people like Shaw can commit acts of great good, no matter her motives in doing it. That shouldn't be diminished. ]
I know I'll be changing my estimation of the man, [ he adds. ] Don't tell him I said that, either.

More for Heather than me. [and it's said with no venom. Maria and Vincent had discussed they would do what they could for the sake of Heather. and Maria knows if she had died instead of Vincent, it would have been worse. Maria didn't have much to lose, Vincent was right about that.]
I won't tell him. [she smiles.] He'd hate to hear anybody thinks well of him. Something you two share in common. [Harold cannot get away from a little teasing, even with such a serious conversation.]
no subject
He really can't argue with them prioritizing Heather's safety. That's only correct; she's a young woman and maybe the only young person Harold has met here that seems at all well-adjusted. That needs to be protected. ]
Someone from home showed up recently for me and from a different time as well. She can be... [ a diplomatic pause ] somewhat abrasive, but if you meet Ms. Shaw, she's entirely trustworthy. [ Harold still finds himself thinking of Maria like she's a number they're trying to help, which means he keeps trying to engender trust in the rest of his team. ]
no subject
she frowns at the pause he gave.]
You're making me feel like she's a little more than somewhat?
no subject
He's just going to ignore that and instead talk about Shaw. He's not going to disclose her personal business so he keeps his description vague, and finds that leaves him struggling with how to actually describe her without getting too personal. ]
She's extremely professional, [ Harold allows, because for all her griping, in comparison to Dillinger the difference in demeanor is laughably stark. ] But she isn't usually looking to make friends. Social niceties are not her strong suit.
no subject
So if I really need help, she'll help me but don't expect her to be my new best friend, is what I'm gathering? Well. I'm used to that.
[people actually holding real conversations with her was truly a first.]
no subject
Maria's summary feels slightly incorrect somehow in its assessment of Shaw. He realizes the inaccuracy after a moment of consideration. ]
She'll help you in almost any circumstance, dire or not, but she won't be very comforting about it, [ he clarifies, sounding tolerantly amused of a grumpy teammate. ] Saying you're used to that concerns me, Ms. Maria. [ Every thing she says about herself sounds awful. ]
no subject
Is it that concerning? [she had not thought it was but well, oops.] I just never had many chances for real conversation is all. And the chances I did have, I don't think they wanted me to talk to them. I just needed to dance for them. It is what it is. It helps me handle people like this Ms. Shaw.

Being in Etraya in such a small population has been a real adjustment for him and John, one that still unnerves him. Typically, his repeating social circle is extremely small -- countable on one hand small. Here, it's strategically sound to make friends, so he is... making friends. And getting to know more about Maria in the process. Her explanation honestly sounds dismal. Harold has a limited social circle by choice, not because he has no chance to expand it. ]
I hope you're finding things are different here, [ he says with a small worried frown. ] Believe me, there's plenty of chances for conversation.
no subject
Harold might be frowning but she is smiling, brushing past any chances for what had gone on. she steals another chocolate with a smile.] Thanks for always taking moments to talk to me, Harold.
